Equine Cardiology for the Specialist – July 2019

This unique hands-on course ran for a second time over the course of five days. It was designed for Specialists to improve and develop their skills in echocardiography. John Keen, Celia Marr, Mark Bowen and Gayle Hallowell led seminars, case discussions and practical sessions covering all aspects of two-dimensional, M Mode and Doppler echocardiography and exploring the novel technologies 3D echo and speckle tracking. Each day there were sessions comparing echocardiography and pathology aimed at helping delegates gain insight on how echo findings correlate with structural changes and pathology discussions were led by Alastair Foote. The course was limited to 6 delegates and participants prepared their own case presentations and journal article summaries to share with the group.

A social evening enjoying entertainment at The Apex in Bury St Edmunds was enjoyed by delegates, lecturers and helpers.

Updates in equine oncology

Anna Hollis, Senior Clinician in Equine Oncology & interim Clinical Lead

Anna will concentrate on research updates and the results of novel treatments for equine sarcoids. We will discuss the first 100 sarcoid cases treated with HDR brachytherapy – what we’ve learnt and how we’ve improved – and looking at the use of strontium plesiotherapy for sarcoids in difficult locations/recurrent lesions.

What do we really know about equine inflammatory airway disease?

IAD is a syndrome of equine lower airway inflammation for which a wide range of case definitions and assessment methods is reported in the scientific literature. Jacqui’s team are assessing the research evidence underpinning the latest expert-consensus case definition of IAD and seeking to understand what this means, in practical terms, particularly for vets working with young racehorses in training.

Equine Echocardiography for the Specialist – June 2017

Six delegates from UK, Belgium and Canada attended this very successful course structured around seminars given by John Keen and Celia Marr, case presentations and journal presentations by the delegates and extensive time for delegates to develop their echocardiography skills supervised by John, Celia, Gayle Hallowell and Mark Bowen. Delegates also benefitted from one-to-one tutoring on strain echo with Simon Robson, adviser to GE Healthcare. Equipment was provided by BCF Technology.
